I see a lot of members on this forum are from Australia and I've been seriously considering moving my family to Australia  when my husband retires.

If somebody could please be so kind as to give me some perspective on the Australian real estate market and where would be good places for a US citizen to buy property.

I might be looking at this as an investment property but if my family were to relocate, I would want to find a place with good schools and a good place for kids to grow up.

Coming from the states you  will be in a better situation than many,  as the USd is holding its own as per the AU$, despite recent fluctuations. My perception is if you wish to increase your investment buy  in the outer suburbs,  but not to far out, ie find a locality with a lower but expected to increase in demand area.

What areas are there likely to be a large influx of skilled workers or where are the not so obvious business centers in Australia?

We have been looking at New South Wales in the Sydney area or possibly Victoria in the Melbourne area.

Do you know of any decent Australia real estate websites or blogs in those areas? Keep in mind, we are looking at a purchase in the USD$600K - $1Mil price range. Is it possible to get oceanfront in a reasonable non-wilderness area in that price range ?

Melbourne is the best town in Oz for sure, i know i have lived there all my life. I have explored options in various other states but none match up to my home town.

Certainly is .
As for your question re influx of skilled tradespeople that could well depend on your own trade and its demand over here.
sorry it took so long to reply .

Thanks for all of the information and the links.

Melbourne would be my first choice as I think there is  a little bit of everything there. I had also noticed Melbourne area is more metropolitan and international so  people are more welcoming to outsiders. Last time my husband and I were in Australia and New Zeland, it seemed certain areas were very unfriendly to outsiders (well, we are African Americans so that might be part of the vibe).

Is Australia a country that allows dual citizenship ? My husband is currently a professinal athlete here in the US and in his sport, he has a maximum of 10 more playing years if he's fortunate not to be injured. We already live in two locations around his playing schedule. I am thinking that we could try Australia for a few years during his off seasons.

No doubt about it Australia is one of the most popular places to immigrate too. I have a relative very high up in a big global company, whom spends Summers in Oz and summers in US  so your thinking isn't new  and is gaining in popularity each year.
Personally i prefer either Melbourne or Surfers  as places to reside, Melbourne while once being colder is definitely warming up each year and business prospects to me are greater in Melbourne.Although that could be  a case of"the devil you know"
If you know what i mean. I grew up here.

I grew up on the east coast of Florida but now I live on the gulf coast of Texas. I'm used to beach towns and surfer type areas. My husband and I are both more comfortable with shorts and sandals. I love the ocean and once when we had to live in Minnesota because of my husbands career, I almost could hear the ocean calling me in my dreams.
