Here's an article about the various popular blog directories that you see a lot of people using on their blogs. It gives information on which ones actually pass "link juice" and which ones are just a complete waste of space on your blog.

Blog Directories

If you have a bunch of those little "chicklets" on your blog, you might want to read this to make sure you remove the useless ones.

Thanks to Paul for the inspiration for this article after he made several comments about most of these directpries just being a total waste.

On the tips in the article, te first one you mentioned is a good directory but the second one isn't becasue it does not link directly to a site.
