| Search engine traffic is the best traffic for me because it is targeted. Begin optimizing your site using the not so competitive keywords by getting more sites link to yours. Try to get links from sites which are related to your niche. If submitting in directories, choose the most related category for your site. If submitting to social bookmarking sites, use your keywords as tags. |

Search engine traffic is number one and can be very difficult. The process of optimizing for search engines will bring traffic by itself before you even get ranked. What I mean is while your increasing your ranking your going to need to increase your backlinks and many other things. As you are doing this those links will begin to bring traffic before you even begin to rank. I would definitely promote by talking in forums, blogs, social mediums, PPC, etc. Probably would recommend reading on optimizing (SEO) and through that process traffic will come.

Absolutely right Cameron. Search engine traffic is the most difficult to obtain and it really does depend on your SEO work. The one error I see many people make right from the start (and I've made myself) is optimizing a site for popular keywords instead of working at less popular long-tail keywords. Getting on the third page of Google for the term "make money" most likely won't bring you as much traffic as getting on the first page for several long-tail keywords like "make money with affiliate programs", "make money writing a blog", "make money doing nothing", etc...
Once you already have some link juice flowing from backlinks and several long-tail keywords nailed down, then it's time to go after more lucrative keywords that will bring in the big traffic.
Another very important SEO tactic these days is using an RSS feed regardless of it you're running a blog or not. RSS feeds really work well to get your content into Google quickly and there are a number of PHP scripts that can easily create an RSS feed from any data or information you might be publishing. |

| You could also try using Yahoo groups and newsgroups for some extra traffic. It all depends on what your niche is an what you're promoting but I've had quite a bit of success using Yahoo groups. One tip if you plan on uisng them is to create your own niche group instead of finding ones to post on. |

| thanks, dave, for your concrete example regarding keywords. have a feeling i've been making that mistake as well. :( mind if i ask how you gauge whether a set of keywords is too popular? any off the cuff standard you use? |

Depending on the keyword research tool I'm using, I generally avoid the top few keywords. Another way is to use a keyword tracker and then plug those keywords into Google to see how many results there are. If there are millions of results, try another keyword mix using a combination of several of the top keywords.
One thing to note, if you have the keywords in your domain name and page title, you're more likely to rank higher than if the keywords aren't in the domain. I learned that lesson the hard way a few years back when I was registering domains names that were obscure and trying to SEO them out. Lately, I've had much better results buying domains with keywords in them.
As far as keyword research tools go, here's the three I use predominantly
Google Adwords tool - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?defaultView=2 SEOBook Keyword tool - http://tools.seobook.com/keyword-tools/seobook/index.php Keyword Discovery tool - http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/
