I have an invision power board (IPB) forum attached to my site. I have spammers hitting said forum like crazy, and because the forum is not set up to require posters to be registered I have no way of controlling the spam or the spammers.

This forum was set up in 2004, and at that time I was registered with IPB so that i could administrate the functions of the forum. Its now 2007, I've had at least one computer crash since 2004 and have no clue what my login is for IPB. Tried every email address I could possibly have been using in 2004 and IPB has no record of me under any email address. I emailed them for assistance on 2/5/2007 and have heard NOTHING.

So I installed a Yet-Another-Bulletin-Board (YABB) forum but haven't gone live with it because I cannot figure out how to make myself a moderator, global moderator, or administrator. I don't want to have another forum thats loaded with spam (one is bad enough).

Any assistance on either forum would be appreciated very much.

Hi Suzy. When Dave gets back, he will help you get things worked out. He might know some other tricks on IPB that he could work step by step with you on that.

First off, you need FTP access to your website. Do you have that ?

Any situation like this with a forum can be overcome easily if you have access to your hosting account. The techniques I'd recommended are not "hacking" an account. If somebody in the situation you are in has legit access to your hosting account, it's a snap to reset the password by directly editing the admin password in the database but you have to have access to the site to get access to the database.

This is a question of specifics. Do they have ftp/ssh access to the account? If so, they can easily grab their settings file and get the database passwords. Assuming their host is running on MySql (which 90% of  hosting accounts are), and use NaviCat to access the database MySql tables and rewrite a new encrypted password with a SQL query.

I'd be willing to fix it all for free because it would take me 30 minutes, if I had the keys to the kingdom but I don't like to extend my services because I don't want to be held liable for something I got nothing for.

It would be great that Suzy gets control of the forum. The spammers have a free range way too much, and me and Suzy can't keep bumping posts to get rid of the spam off the front page.

dave, I'll give you the keys to the kingdom and more, since if I don't my alternatives are:

1)transfer all the good posts to YABB forum (where I cannot find a stinking way to make myself administrator or moderator anyway)

or

2) Pay IPB 149.00 for a license so I can run the newest version of IPB (would still probably have to transfer all the good posts)

or

3) spend an hour every day bumping spamming posts.

I do have access to the hosting for myster-e-mail (where the forums are located).  Is that what you need?  I have ftp access also, since back in 2003 I was doing my own upgrades for the Cash Crusader scripts and needed ftp for that.

I had a friend get in the IPB account yonks ago (at least 2 years) and wondered how he did it since I couldn't remember passwords etc.

ETA -- Dave I'd be willing to pay you to solve this problem!

So you know how to transfer the posts from your old forum to yabb but can't figure out how to make yourself an admin? Seems backwards...

Paul, she means she can copy the posts and transfer them to the other forum.
