Pluggy, Have you ever had to do ASP before ?? I like ASP as well as PERL, PHP, Cold Fusion....
ASP is just like PERL (IMHO). It has it's strengths and weaknesses. I really liked ASP back in 2001-2004 but the whole .net thing made me realize that when dealing with a Microsoft product, they are always going to make developers jump through hoops to support their framework and keep people gainfully employed. PHP is like PERL and LINUX, people who get into those territories get into them on a labor of love, not because they think they can make a decent paycheck being a *certified developer.
... If you learn C/C++, then learn web/unix/linux shell languages later, it's the best education but no guarantees on the paycheck.
You can learn VB, MFC, Oracle, etc but the question is "are you a well rounded developer". Being well-rounded between systems administration and programming is the holy grail for all developers. A real developer know Linux systems *and* Windows systems *and* Mac/BSD platforms.
Well-rounded developers are sought after.

I have used ChiilSoft ASP in the past (before it was acquired by Sun) but it used to have serious issues when connecting to a remote SQLServer to execute stored procedures and user defined functions. Using a file DSN-less connection to a local .mdb Access database file worked fine but the issue of simultaneous connections kept that solution from being very useful.
The thing I always liked about ASP is the Global.asa and the ability to handle sessions (Cold Fusion does the same thing). I wish PHP had that level of control because silly little things like showing how many users are logged into a site need a workaround in PHP but it's handled natively by ASP+CF.
I'm not particularly a "purist" and although I do prefer Linux as my choice for server platform, I have no problem using ASP/SQLServer as opposed to PHP/MySQL. I've even enjoyed setting up intranets using Macs and FileMakerPro for database.
@The topic starter - It's not really necessary to add folders for each language because this isn't a programming forum per se. However, we do have ample categories for developers :
Administration - For systems administration (webservers, dns, firewall, networking) topics Programming - For all programming (C, C++, Php, Perl, ASP) topics Database - For all database (mysql, sql server, filemaker pro) related topics Website Design - For website design (flash, html, css, etc) topics Graphic Design - For graphic design (photoshop, illustrator, gimp, etc) topics Website Reviews - Post your website for review by the community
