Can search engines (Google) penalize you for over optimizing a webpage? Is there such a thing ?

search engines are now equipped to tell is you spam keywords, meta tags.. so just try to get unique content..

Yes you can be penalized. Search engine may think that your are buying links because you add links very fast.

If you add many back links for a short period of time, then search engine may think that your are buying links or whatever.

You'll get penalize if you don't follow the rules and guidelines in getting inbound links..

It will depend on how you optimize your site. If you have used any black hat technique then SE will always penalize you.
