I have a question that I need everyone on this board to give me their honest opinion please.

Do Search Engines (google & yahoo mainly) still use meta tags or is this something in the past?

I have heard that the search engines have devalued them in their rankings. And I have seen some discussions relating to this on forums.

I don't know the answer for sure, but from what I've read on various forums it seems that most people still think that meta tags are still a major factor in how the search engines rank your site.

Google uses the META Description tag in search engine listings and if the GoogleBot doesn't find a META Description tag, they will just take the first text they see on a page.

Here's an example of two results from this forum....

Notice how the first result contains a snippet of the thread and the second contains the first text on the page which is irrelevant (ie: Welcome guest...). I was able to show this example because I recently coded a modification of this forum software that  includes META Description because when I was checking for pages indexed for this forum, all of the indexed threads had the same descriptions in Google.

This doesn't improve your SEO in terms of getting indexed, however, when a person searching Google views several results and is choosing one to click on, having more relevant text in the site description will most likely cause a searcher to click the more relevant listing.

I think Meta Descriptions are definitely useful for search engine traffic. I have my doubts about meta keywords though, when meta description is present...

Some of the smaller engines still place importance in the meta tags. The bigger engines are more interested in the content that actual site visitors will see.

Meta keywords are essentially useless. Google doesn't use them, nor do Yahoo and MSN - EXCEPT for the fact that if you have a dynamic site, like a forum or blog and each page has the same keywords, Google will pick that out and flag duplicate pages for some reason. I found that out the hard way.

When searching for something within a search engine (I will use Google for this example) the results given show Title and Description Meta Tags. This means when making a conscious decision of what website to click on the title and description tag comes into play.

Meta Tags are one of the most important parts of SEO on a website. They on their own can inform millions of users what your website is all about and can increase your traffic and potential sales/conversions. Correct Meta data leads you on the path to correct SEO practice and you will reap the benefits.
