I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

Trial and error is the way I've taught myself SEO but if you want a industry standard guide, you should see Aaron Wall's SEObook.com

I never found a good resource myself, I had to self teach by hanging around forums. Google 26 steps to 15k a Day by Brett . This was the first article that ever taught me something about SEO. It was written awhile back but it still holds up today. I'm page 1 for all my KW btw.

I've just started getting into SEO about 6-months ago. In that time, I've learned a lot but I also have a lot more to learn. My advice is to keep reading forums, reading articles, reading books on seo and never stop learning. As far as where to start, I'd google: seo, keywords, link building, dofollow, backlinks, article submitting, link directories, blog commenting, signature links, google analytics, anchor text and social bookmarking. That would be a good start. There's a lot of ways to drive traffic to your web site but remember in the end, content is king. If your site sucks or you are linkbaiting people to your site, don't expect to make much money.

trial and error. with lots of testing. Try to just read up and get hands on with it as much as you can.
