I've read about this issue before about people using proxies to suck PR from your site and to get it blacklisted in Google for duplicate content.

I don't understand what makes people spend time trying to hurt other webmasters they don't even know.

well first they check out who their MAIN competitors are...study that competitor site, hack it ..until they got it blacklisted from Google and the hacker site will now OWN the traffic and profit!
