I'm thinking about starting a forum but I'm not sure what software to use??

I know this forum is using SMF and it looks really good. Other forums I go on are using VBulletin software. I know some are free and some are not free.

Is there any big difference between the free and paid softwares?

Which one do you think is the best and why?

You can try to use vBulletin. It makes the best forum but it cost $200 to start up. If you need free forum software you can use phpBB or SMF forum. Both are good.

vBulletin remains my favorite because has more features than any other forum software.

Anyway, there are other very good softwares like:

Invision Power Board
Xenforo
phpBB
SimpleMachinesForum
SEOBoard
Vanilla Forums
bbPress
VikingBoard
miniBB
YaBB
QuickSilverForums
NextBBS

I went with SMF but now I'm having big time problems with spammers from India and Pakistan. Thinking of shutting my forum down already.
