I've been considering starting a forum for my business site but I want to know if SMF is better than vBulleting or phpBB ? I know SMF and phpBB are free software and vBulletin is paid for but is there any real reason why somebody would choose the paid version of software over a free one?

Obviously I'd have to say I prefer SMF forum to vBulletin. I've used PHPBB before but I found it wasn't as easy to modify as SMF. It seems SMF has the largest userbase and their forum has topics about any quiestionyou might have. I personally like "open source" software that I can customize to my on preferences and SMF is really easy to get the hang of once you understand the basic file layout.
I think vBulleting is preferred by Google for SEO. I tend to see most SMF forums inner pages are not indexed or greybarred but on vBulleting forums the inner pages and folders often get pagerank.
