If I want to create my own theme for my Wordpress blog, do  I need some sort of special software or development kit to do it?

If it can be done in basic html and CSS, I know how to do that but I don't want to mess with something and have my blog malfunction.

also, my blog is live. How can I make sure the live blog doesn't get interrupted ?

You can start with a basic theme like the one posted here

It depends on you but I like to create from scratch. For starters, you can modify themes and added some great features to it. Good luck!  Wink

OK - what I have figure out is to create my theme in a new folder in my Themes directory. This way I can't screw up my current install.

Is ther some easy way to switch themes with out having to log into my dashboard?

I think if you want design and develop  WordPress Themes. Then you can adopt two steps.  one way  you know how to deal with html and css then you can develop them easily by using these platform. The second thing you need a software to design a theme like Dreamweaver and artisteer application.
