A friend told me that some viruses and trojans that you get, can actually find confidential personal ID information on you computer like SSN or credit card info, and send it to scammer who then can rip you off?

Is this true? What can I do about it?

I have a anti-virus program called Cyberdefender on my computer, is that enough protection?

Thank you for your help.

but I don't even have my SSN or bank account info on my computer? So is there anything at risk I should really worry about?

Not sure...maybe a hacker would, personally I don't do online banking, but it's best to have virus protection, I use AVG for free and spydoctor
Check your bank and your credit card statements to be sure.My friends credit card was somehow leaked online to some person at website he had used it and they ran a bill of $5000, my friend didn't have to pay it, credit card company saw it was a fraud...Identity theft is on the rise....

Definitely. It's hard for a virus to simply get access to your "information." But trojans can be used to gain a certain level of control on a system and look for files, if someone is controlling it. In any case, it doesn't hurt to be safe with AVG, for example, and some firewall.

There are viruses that use key-loggers to track every key stroke you make.  So when you log into your bank account or any other account where  you have a user name and password, the "hackers" collect your information.  You can prevent this by storing your passwords in a document.  You can then copy and past the user name and password information instead of typing.

It certainly can get usernames and passwords. It can capture keystrokes and also there are some virus which can capture what is happening on your screen. Not only is it necessary to have a good anti-virus it is also important to keep updating it daily.
