I've just started setting up what I would like displayed on my website, I was just wondering whether any other members have tips on what sells and what does not? e.g books vs DVD's e.t.c.

to make a store online you have to know what you are selling first - not after starting the site.

are you to seo stages yet? driving traffic? what level are you promoting at?

If you are at the first level - my best advices to you is - take something you into ie: Warcraft or football - and use that base as your action.
